January 30th, 2015 (The Answer and Why is Decision Making so Important)-- The Fearless Mind

Only respond to the "response question(s)" in the "Comments" section of the blog! The other information included in the post (quotes, questions to think about) should help guide your answers. Included are things that stood out to me and questions that I think will help you in your process of developing a fearless mind. REMINDER: You must submit your response by Friday at 11:59 pm in order to get credit for Advanced Conditioning

RESPONSE QUESTION(S):
  1. What do you think are the benefits of random training?
  2. How can visualization benefit you as a softball player?
  3. Why do you think decision making is so important?
  4. Explain the following quote (tell me what you think it means, how you feel about it, and how you apply it to yourself as a softball player):
"Individuals who don't beat themselves up tend to regain their confidence more rapidly. When we make good decisions, we make fewer mistakes, and when we make fewer mistakes, we are more likely to perform more assertively-- resulting in enhanced performance. When overall performance is enhanced for extended periods of time, the law of averages tells us we will eventually win. The more we win, the greater our confidence and the more likely we will relax and not rush, further enhancing good decision making" (138).
The Answer

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear" (131).

"All the physical skills in the world are useless if we don't know what to do with them" (133).

"When we are always striving to improve, it is important to remember the foundation on which our system is built" (134).

"Only those willing to take risks learn new skills sets that can be the difference between being really good and being great" (135).

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT: Consider the benefits of blocked training and random practice. Is one more beneficial than the other? Which would you choose? Why?

Why Is Decision Making So Important

"Ninety-five percent of performance is physical, five percent is mental. However, the five percent that is mental rules the other ninety-five percent" (137).

"When athletes are confident, they tend to make good decisions" (137).

"We are only as good as the decisions that we make" (138).

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT: Why is it important to be confident? Why is making good decisions important? How can being assertive result in enhanced performance?

  1. -random training is a benefit because it helps us have more game like situations. This is important because with out game like situations we will crack under pressure and not retain the skills we have in the hour of need. Where as, if we use random training we can have that mental confidence and knowledge of what we need to do, and where we need to go.
-visualization can help me as a softball player because it allows me to think about what I would need to do. It also helps by allowing room for question and conversation that otherwise I may not have thought about before. Visualization is also useful because you can do all this without the stress and lack of time that a live situation would grant.
-decision making is important because without it we have nothing."All the physical skills in the world are useless if we don't know what to do with them" (133). So what this is saying pretty much is that we can be the strongest, fastest, and biggest, but if we can't make the correct decision in that moment it all means nothing. For example, I could be freaking amazing but if I don't make the decision to throw a girl a change up instead of a curve ball it can be the difference between a homerun and an easy out.
I also like this quote. "The worst hit shot the right spot is better than the best hit shot to the wrong place" (133).
-I think this quote is a chain reaction that's leads back to if we don't beat ourselves up and have more confidence then in the end we will win more which will cause greater confidence, which starts it all over again. So it all goes back to how much confidence we have.
The way this quote makes me feel also relates with how I apply it to myself as a softball player. I tend to beat myself up a lot, I think pretty much all of the time I am more hard on myself then any of my hardest coaches. Rarely am I patting myself on the back and having someone telling me I didn't do a good enough job. This quote is a huge testament to me because if I can be less harsh on myself then I can have more confidence which goes all the way to winning more. So if I can just calm my nerves down and focus more on what I'm doing right instead of what I'm doing wrong then I will improve tenfold.

  2. Random training helps you develop skills like muscle memory. If you envision success in your smaller unaffiliated, with outcome objectives, I think it helps you to see how attainable overall success really is! Decision making is important because we need to not only be able to make appropriate choices, but be ready to make those descisions because there are always outcomes. The smaller of a decision you have to make too, the easier it is to have confidence and lead to success. Overall I think the quote means knowing you can do it influences performance positively. I'm going to apply this not only in games but in practice so I can get over myself and start improving.

  3. Random training is training..but random. VISUALIZATION IS AWESOME!! I do it all the time, whether it is going up to bat or preparing to throw a pitch. If you see yourself do something correct in your mind you are more likely to physically accomplish that task. Decision making is important especially if you are playing a very mental game. When you are in the box you need to decide what pitch I am looking for, and where am I going to hit it. When you are in the field you need to decide whether you want to throw the ball to first and get an out or throw the ball to second to get a double. When you are base running you need to decide whether I am going to do a slide by, or a dive.
When you keep gettting down on yourself about you not doing something correctly that is not going to get yourself anywhere. Stay positive, stick with it, and keep working hard and you will probs not even notice you are doing something wrong, and you will keep getting better.

  4. - A benefit of random training is letting us get used to high pressure situations. You perfect a concept in practice but you don't know what will happen in game like situations. That is how you can benefit from random training.
    - You can get used to seeing different speeds and kinds of pitches in a game like situation.
    - If you don't have a clear objective, there is really not a point in doing it. You need to have a goal and reason and be assertive to see improvement.
    - To me the quote means not giving up or getting down on yourself. You messed up and you should move on and get it next time. Make a goal to improve on the point and start improving

  5. Random training is beneficial because it helps us have more gamelike situations and get used to the pressure that it brings. We get used to the pressure because we just have to do it so when it actually happens in a game we have developed that memory and won't freak out.
Visualization is super important because when you can visualize yourself doing a certain task or play then you know you can achieve it and it is easier to do. It is Visualization is such a unique and one of the most successful training tools. It helps you develop more focus and concentration and boosts your athletic performance. Negative thoughts leave the mind replaced by positive thoughts. It just reinforces positive thinking so your performance is thus taken to a higher level.
Like we do in our Mental Skills Journal decision making is important because it helps you set a clear objective. You make the objective and decide what is most important to work on. It helps break things up and make the big picture a little smaller. It is also useful to have good decision making on the field. When you have a split second to choose to throw the ball between two different places or plays like that, then you need to be able to make that decision quickly and proficiently.
I think this quote pertains to a lot of things we have talked about. When you make a mistake don't hang your head. You just got to brush it off and move forward. Once you realize that you are good and gain confidence so you make better decisions and then your game becomes better. So when we gain confidence and are playing at our best our decision making is on point and we don't mess around, feel sorry for ourselves or beat ourselves up. We become the best players we can be when we can brush off mistakes and move forward.

  6. the most important things that come with the random training situations are things that can help any player, no matter what sport you play. The main things that i pulled out of it is that they will make you not have to second guess yourself when you are in the most pressure filled situations. Along these same lines, it will also help you to become a better player when you think about the not so noticeable things like, muscle memory, its not something that you think about on a day to day basis but it is somethign that you need to compete with. This was very easy for me to relate to because i have things that need to be fixed in my swing, but its going to take training my self and my muscles to do it, and get it fixed. Visualization is something that every softball player will find useful in every game that they will ever play in, rather its seeing the pitch that they will launch over the fence. It could also be used to figured out how you are going to field the game winning catch. in my mind i see the quote as don't beat yourself up up over messing up or making a mistake, all you are going to do is make you confidence go down.

  7. Random training is very important when it comes to us athletes. It helps us prepare for games and practices with learning movements, mental skills, etc. Visualization is a major key during softball, it helps you find the things that you need to work on and fix to make yourself a better softball player. Another reason why it's good to visualize is because it helps you see the full picture when trying to get better as an individual and a team. Decision making is very important when playing a sport. You have to be able to react in a moments notice to have a successful play. If you prepare yourself before every pitch/situation you will find that you are more confident of how you play. Decision making helps improve your confidence and the way you play because you have thought through the whole scenario. I really enjoy this quote. It is very important not to beat yourself up after a bad mistake because you don't want your first mistake to lead to another. As a softball player this quote helps me realize that whenever I make a mistake I need to learn how to fix it and try my best to learn and grow from it. Then in the end it will be make me a better softball player and teammate.

  8. the benefits of random training can help us practice real game like situations and then decision making can help me and softball because then I can help with better base running because I can judge for myself whether to go or not to go and visualizations you can help me as a softball player by letting me be able to see the ball and to visualize plays in my head so when I'm in a game I know what I should be doing. this quote means to me that when I make a bad play that I should just keep myself up and not beat myself up because I can get more confidence and I can come back faster and stronger

  9. The benefits of random training are huge in any sport. They help us get used to real game situations and help us with quicker decision making, which is huge in softball. Visualization, to me, is one of the most important things you can have as an athlete. It helps me, not only see what I need to do (which is huge on its own) but it helps me with a mental confidence of being able to see myself making a big play or even just seeing myself succeed at something small. It also brings a confidence of at least knowing what to do and knowing that I know how to do it. Decision making is probably one of the top things you need as an athlete. Even if you have the best arm ever and can throw perfect, or if you can hit home-run after home-run, it doesn't matter if you don’t have that quick decision making of knowing when or where to throw the ball (which could cause someone to get an extra base) or when to swing your bat (which can determine the difference between a bad hit popped right up behind you or an amazing hit). Without good decision making skills, your athletic skills are useless. To me, this quote means that the better you are at jumping back and getting into a positive mental state, the better performer you can be. Personally, I know I do a whole lot better when I am having a good game or are in a positive mindset, which is basically what this quote is explaining. So, be positive and in the end you will improve a whole lot more than if you were to hold onto whatever mistake you made and act like a failure and keep a negative mindset.

  10. Random training keeps you on your toes and gets you ready for game like situations. They make you better and smarter. Visualization can help you see the ball and what might happen in situations. Visualization helps you be smarter. Decision making is important because it helps you know what to do. It helps you come up with a plan so that you aren't frozen in the field not knowing what to do. That quote has a lot to it. but what it means to me is I can't let a mistake get in the way of how I preform. I need to bounce back quick, come back faster and stronger. The quote makes me want to be more confident in how I preform and not let any mistakes get in my way of me becoming a better athlete.

  11. Random Training helps the team be ready for game like situations. In softball for us to really practice game situations we have to work together as a team. We have to learn to talk to each other and know where the play is at all times. When we master Random Training and working together as a team it helps us to have more control when we are in a real game.
Kind of like I said before, when the ball comes to us or our teammates and we already know where the play is and can visualize it. We can help our team and ourselves know where to throw it and get the best play possible.
When you make a decision ahead of time it helpsyou so that when you are forced to make a decision in a split second you can make a the best choice of where to throw the ball. Learning to make decisions now can also help you throughout life too. Not just in softball or sports. We will have to make many decisions throughout our whole life. If we learn now how to make good decisions it a quick amount of time. It will help us out in the end.
I like the beginning of the quote when it says "Individuals who don't beat themselves up tend to regain their confidence more rapidly." That is so true. When I choose to not beat myself up over a mistake that I have made I tend to do better and don't keep making mistakes on top of that one mistake. Also when you are not beating yourself up over one mistake you can have a clear mind and keep focusing on the game and the team rather than the mistake and yourself.
