November 14th, 2014 (A Fearless Mind and High Performance)-- The Fearless Mind

REMINDER: You must respond by FRIDAY in order to get credit for Advanced Conditioning!

Only respond to the "response question" in the "Comments" section of the blog! The other information included in the post (quotes, questions to think about) should help guide your answers. Included are things that stood out to me and questions that I think will help you in your process of developing a fearless mind.

RESPONSE QUESTION(S):
1) Based on your reading, explain what you think it means to have a fearless mind?
2) What is something that you took away/learned from this reading assignment?
3) What was your favorite quote from the two sections you read? Why?

A Fearless Mind

"What if we knew exactly what we wanted to achieve, had a plan to achieve it, and never allowed any negative emotions or self-defeating thoughts to inhibit us, allowing us to execute what needs to be done to achieve our objectives" (4)?

"When we learn how to cultivate a fearless mind, we can achieve whatever we set out to accomplish. A fearless mind is achieved when we have cleansed ourselves of the barriers that prevent us from reaching our greatest potential. We do this by learning to accept what we have control over and what we don't" (4).

"The two most prominent areas of wasted energy are guilt and fear.... The error many people make is consistently allowing their attention to dwell on the mistakes of the past.... Move on.... When we attend to what may or may not happen in the future, we open the door to fear" (5).

"We are setting ourselves up for failure when we expect outcomes that are not within our direct control" (5).

"We are responsible for the expressions we carry on our faces.... We should be held accountable for those aspects of our lives over which we have control" (7).

"[The mental skills] journal gives individuals the opportunity to take responsibility for their lives and for their performances" (7).

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT: How might using a mental skills journal daily benefit you as a softball player? What are some things that you have direct control over in your own life? What are some things that you do not have direct control over in your own life?

High Performance

“High performance also occurs when everything around us seems out of control, when people around us are losing control of their emotions, becoming irritated, frustrated, and angry, at times even with us. Despite all these outside challenges, we maintain control of our minds and, indirectly, our emotions. Maintaining focus on what needs to be done-- increasing confidence and one’s ability to make good decisions-- results in high performance” (10).

"Every day I seek to perform better than the day before. It doesn't matter what the day holds for me, I just want to leave this mortal existence knowing I didn't waste a moment, that I gave my very best effort each and every day" (11).

"Deliberate practice.... Paying attention to the details" (11).

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT: How can you exhibit a "high performance" while playing softball? What are some ways that you can "give your very best effort each and every day"?

  1. - When you have a fearless mind you are in a good mental place for your sport. You have control and can perform your best every game.
    - What reaching a high performance was. and when you reach it.
    - "we do this by learning to accept what we have control over and what we don't" pg. 4

  2. To me, I feel fearless mind is a mind with out self doubt. He is right when he is talking about how a lot of athletes can't pursue there dreams because they never learned how to control their self doubt. I have had experiences with this countless times.
I had never realized how true it is that high performers, are never satisfied, no matter how many metals or trophies, or awards they have gotten, they never settle for just that, they always try to be better, and that is so true.
" To high performers, it is about the journey." Pg.9
" In order to reach our greatest potential, we need to stop fighting with ourselves and consolidate our energy for the purpose of achieving whatever it is we chose." Pg.9
I love this second quote, because it really states what you need to do to obtain whatever you want, and that it does take a lot of effort and focus to get it.

  3. I think to have a fearless mind means that you are confident in yourself and that you trust that you can achieve your goals, and I learned that if you have confidence in yourself and your teammates you guys are unstoppable and that if you have a fearless mind you can achieve anything you set your mind to. and my favorite part in the book was about when I talked about how the girl great hitting and serves and everything in practice but in a game she just lost her confidence but how it showed that if she had a mental toughness and a fearless mind how she could achieve her goals and I like that part.

  4. To have a fearless mind it means to be able to preform with precision and accuracy. With full control of your choices and actions. To do all that and not live in the past (guilt) or worry about the future (fear) is how you have a fearless mind.
I liked the story about Abraham Lincoln. We can always control our attitude, effort, and emotions. I know that I hate dealing with people in a bad mood so we should all be able to not have others deal with our bad moods. No matter what.
"Why do we keep beating the horse. It is dead; move on." This was my favorite quote because how many times do we make a mistake and constantly mourn over a mistake that we have made that before we know it has led to another one, then we are sure we suck so bad we can't do anything right and we because of our negative thoughts can't do any thing right. I know I do. I need to move on and work on the next play.

  6. To have a fearless mind is to not psych yourself out. Most of this sport is mental. if we have the mental toughness that we are going to make every play, and hit every at bat, we will be good to go and unstoppable. it also means, play the game, not the opponent. My favorite quote in the book was about beating the dead horse. This quote meant a lot to me because, i know personally, when i dont bounce back and refocus from a mistake i made, it makes me do worse and worse every play after that. We all need to forget about the mistake and refocus on our goals.

  7. What it means to have a fearless mind is to have a confident mind. It's a mind that knows how to set goals and how to accomplish them. It's knowing that you can do what ever you want to do and to be able to do it well.I learned that something I need to work on that would help me in games, is to be able to control my emotions and stay confident even when we might be losing or I'm in a slump.
"The two most prominent areas of wasted energy are guilt and fear.... The error many people make is consistently allowing their attention to dwell on the mistakes of the past.... Move on.
I like that quote because it's definitely something I need to work on and realize that it's okay to make mistakes.

  8. 1. I think that when you have a fearless mind I think, like what Ashton said that you are confident, you don't have doubt in yourself and you are always in a positive, uplifting, mindset.
    2. I took away that really, it’s not just me who just dwells on what I have done wrong, but I really learned the importance of getting over it and taking that next step on fixing and dealing with it.
    3. So I love quotes so it was super hard to pick one but I picked one to go along with my answer to number two. In the chapter, the fearless mind, on page 5 it says, “When we allow our mind to dwell too much on the past, it impinges on our ability to live in the moment and enjoy the reality of what life has to offer. Why do we keep beating the horse? It’s dead; move on.” I really liked this quote because it is the best advice to looking in the past. As it says, “why do we keep beating the horse? It’s dead” just like when we make a mistake like strike out, or miss a pop fly, or any other simple mistake, there’s nothing we can do to so we just have to “move on.” And that’s what I like. Sometimes people just need somebody to tell them the words they need to hear, and that’s what Mr. Manning did for me.

  9. I think having a fearless mind is being positive in your thoughts and actions. If you get down on yourself you will have doubts and make more mistakes.
What I got from this section was that we should believe in ourselves and when we make mistakes bounce back and do better the next time. If we let the mistake stay in our minds we will constantly make more.
My favorite part was the quote before the section. "Let nothing perturb you, nothing frighten you. All things pass. " I like this because yes, you might make a mistake but it was in the past and you should learn from it instead of get down on yourself for it.

  11. 1. I think it means knowing you can do it. And not only that, but taking the responsibility to go and do it.
    2. I learned that to be the best there are so many details behind it. There are obvious details, but everyone has different weaknesses, and it's funny how our weaknesses can fade or be highlighted by this sport. Luckily we play a team sport so we can combine our strengths. :)
    3. "There truly seems to be one narrow path to high performance but many paths to mediocrity." I like this because it is true. I have seen it. You guys know Sarah is good. You know she is smart. But she has always been someone quietly doing her part for the good of the team.

  12. To me, having a fearless mind means being able to accomplish anything. If you have no fear, you could do so many things. One thing I learned from the reading was to be patient with myself. I liked the quote in High Performance when he says, "To me, high performance is not a phenomenon that just falls in our lap. It requires hard, smart work for years-sometimes even decades-before we can achieve it." I really like that because a lot of times I get frustrated with myself if I don't learn something or get really good at something fast enough. So I like how he says that sometimes it takes years or even decades to achieve high performance.

  13. -I think having a fearless mind means to have a confident mindset. I think it means that we are in control and we know exactly what we want.
-I learned what high performance was. I learned that there isn't just one thing that makes up your high performance. It's achieved when we have put all of the outside problems aside and basically just do our best. It takes hard work and we have to do it create it ourselves. It brings us peace and satisfaction.
-"Many individuals struggle with learning from the past and leaving it there...Why do we keep beating the horse? It's dead; move on. (5)"
This quote stood out to me because I think it's a really important part of having a fearless mind. We need to be looking into the future, not behind us. We're not going to get anywhere if we're just stuck out whole lives on one thing that happened. I think I learning this now would help later in life.

  14. 1. Having a fearless mind means being 100% confident in yourself mentally. It's being able to achieve anything that you truly set your mind to.
    2. I learned that you never truly fail, as long as you know you have tried your hardest and you never gave up. That's when you can say you have honestly succeeded. I also learned that it's important to keep a Mental Skills Journal that way it can help me develop my mental skills.
    3. "We are setting us up for failure when we expect outcomes that are not within our direct control"
"I have to be responsible for those things over which I have direct control"
I like these two quotes because it reminds me that I control my destiny. I have to be the one that decides how hard I work and and how hard I challenge myself. I have to be the one responsible for my greatness.

  15. Having a fearless mind means that you aren't afraid to set goals and do everything you can to achieve them. You fear nothing and give it your all. Barriers are broken down and what you want to achieve is achieved.
I learned that tf we all just focus on what we can control and not on what we can't control, then our overall performance will be better. I also learned that to achieve greatest potential we need to stop fighting with ourselves and focus all of that energy into our goal we are working towards.
"When we learn how to cultivate a fearless mind, we can achieve whatever we set out to accomplish.a fearless mind is achieved when we have cleansed ourselves of the barriers that prevent us from reaching our greatest potential."
I really like this because the only thing holding us back are barriers that we can easily control. And it reiterates how we can seriously be so amazing. With no fear and doubt, we can achieve whatever we want. You can be unstoppable, in softbalk and life, if you just get past the barriers and you can be great.

  16. To have a fearless mind is to perform without hesitation or fear in your mind and expecting successful results from your performance and being able to perform confidently and knowing that you can correct yourself and make mistakes even if the outcome of that performance isn't well,

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Out deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us."
"When we look in a morrior, we see the life we've lived. What do you see?"

  17. A deliberate practice would be everyone working hard at something that they want. Not only what they want but to help others out too! Some efforts you can do to have a deliberate practice would be focusing on what you want to get better at. Also fixing it. To help others its little things if someone wants to work on their hitting you can shag the balls but work on what you want to work on two. So you are pretty much killing two birds with one stone. The meaning of the quote is if we have a certain goal you can't think of the past and sat what if this happens again. You have to have confidence and gave that positive attitude for you to accomplish that goal. The importance is to don't think about your past the past is the past think about today and have the confidence in yourself and not only yourself your team too. One quote I liked was "when we loose control of our emotions, we aren't thinking anymore; we are worrying." I learned that personally I need to put my energy towards the next play and not dwell on my last play that I made a mistake. Just leave it behind and flush it down the toilet.

  18. To have a fearless mind would be to not be afraid of making mistakes. To play with no hesitation and have the confidence in your self and your team. To not be afraid to make goals and if you don't make them that games be sure to get the the next! I learned that we need to control what we can control. Also if we make a mistake bounce back and have confidence in yourself that you will get the next one! My favorite quote was "why do we keep beating the horse? Its dead; move on." I liked that quote because you can't keep dwelling on your past love on think about the next play and how you will make the play you will make. If a teammate makes a mistake don't get down stay up have their back. One thing I think is not only do you need to have your teammates backs but you have to have your own too.

  19. To me having a fearless mind means you aren't afraid. You're not afraid to make mistakes, or go hard for the ball. Having a fearless mind is essential in softball. If you're afraid to go hard for a ball, or swing you'll never succeed.
I learned that no athlete is truly satisfied with themselves.
My favorite quote is "let nothing pertb you or frighten you....patience achieves everything. Personally for me I need to work on patience. While hitting I think it's difficult to be patient. I'm always ahead of the ball because I simply can't wait for it. I'm willing to work on becoming patient because I believe that it really does achieve everything.

  20. -To have a fearless mind is to not be afraid. Not to be afraid to make mistakes. Go after your goal. You can't be afraid or you will most likely make a lot of mistakes.
-Again you can't be afraid. Have confidence and if you make a mistake shake it off. No need to dwell on the past.
-The last comment is leading into my favorite quote which is the "Why do we keep beating the dead horse, its dead, move on." Im not copying anyone but that really is my favorite. It's saying there are other things to worry about, if you make a mistake move on no need to dwell on the past.

  21. To me to have a fearless mind really means a lot. From this reading the number one thing that i think of in order to have a fearless mind, you yourself needs to be fearless, and be willing to do anything and everything that it takes to complete either a very simple or a very hard task.
Something that I took away from this assignment is something that I should have learned along time ago and there is no reason that I haven't: I learned that to overcome your biggest fears you have to face them first or you will get absolutely nowhere in life.
My favorite quote from this section of the book was "High performance is when those factors within our direct responsibility are being controlled and mastered-when we are completely at one with ourselves." The reason that i really like this quote is because it has many meanings, the meaning that I like the most out of this is that to be able to perform at the best of our own abilities,we must be completly at one with ourselves.
